Looking for Granite - Try Classic Design in Gulf Breeze

Remodeling/restoration projects are challenging enough without having to beg a company to sell you their product, which is why I wouldn't recommend Superior Granite on Pine Forest Road unless you just feel like being tortured. They will not sell less than an entire slab; won't come out to make their template unless you're purchasing 15 square feet; and won't make anything from a template that YOU bring in/provide. So, if you have a small kitchen or bath that you are trying to do, or a top made for a dresser....forget it, they are not interested.

Thank goodness I found Classic Design in Gulf Breeze and they were friendly, helpful, and appreciated the project.

Antique Theatre Seats for Sale

Mike Dicks, local artist, who created the Pelican for Pelican Drop-New Year's Eve celebration in Pensacola has about 80 antique theatre flip seats which he salvaged, that are available at his working studio in the Belmont Building 401 N. Reus St. They are wood backed and some are Haywood Wakefield. All have green leather or green faux covered seats...great for media rooms, mud rooms, kids areas, or gathering spaces. I am writing because I have been asked to assist an incoming single LCDR(Lieutenant Commander/ O-4) at NAMI (Naval Aerospace Medical Institute)on NAS Pensacola. She is coming off a ship (an aircraft carrier)and is going to be in P'cola for a three-year assignment.

With all the big houses, empty nesters, and poor economy, I am betting there is someone who would enjoy the benefits of having a military officer reside with them for a reasonable monthly fee.

I used to take in flight surgeons at my home and I loved it. They were
interesting/busy/forward-looking/professional/respectful/guaranteed to pay every month/and well educated. You can't ask for better qualities in a renter. Additionally, their sporadic work schedules provided even more security at the house.

Please pass this to all the people of North Hill who might be
interested/willing/hopeful of this type of situation.

Tile Installer Recommendation

I wanted to let the other members of the association know about a
wonderful experience I had with a ceramic tile installer. His name is
Joe Alvarez/698-3014. He doesn't advertise but he is HIGHLY
recommended by the brick and tile vendors and word of mouth.
Craftsmanship, attitude, and PRICE were significantly better than
several of the big name yellow page advertisers. I'd highly recommend him for either indoor (which was the case with us-back hall) or outdoor work.

Piano For Sale

Tree Information

There have been many tree removal individuals/firms giving quotes to neighborhood residents that are claiming that a tree species, Quercus hemisphaerica (laurel oak), is protected as a City Heritage Tree and telling residents that they CAN'T take down the tree.
Q. hemisphaerica is NOT protected, but another tree species, Quercus laurifolia (common name also laurel oak) IS protected.

We only have Q. hemisphaerica in the neighborhood. They are the large, tall, straight oak trees that have a gray-ish bark and yellow/brown leaves. Many that are older (>40-50 years) SHOULD be removed as the inner bark rots and the shallow root system fails and they fall over during/after large storms and can casue severe property damage.

Working with lead paint

The EPA has come out with sweeping new work practices for pre 1978 homes. This will effect almost every one in North Hill. All contractors must be certified to work on these homes and must follow stringent dust control and clean up procedures. Landlords who rent pre- 1978 will also be affected.
These measures are designed to protect you from lead poisoning.
If you disturb more than 6 square feet you must follow the regulations. Home owners do not have to comply, if they are doing the work themselves, but it is highly recommended that they follow the same guide lines.
North Hill Renovation has completed the training and we are waiting for our certification documents.

Crime Information Now Available via Pensacola Police Dept. Website

Crime mapping is an interactive map that allows people to research crime and incidents reported to the Pensacola Police Department.

The program places icons on the street map representing reported crimes — from homicides to vandalism. When computer users click on the icon, the program displays the case number and the time and date the incident was reported. This allows people to see what is happening in their city and in their neighborhood.

Additionally, this mapping system allows the police department to provide valuable information about crime activity by neighborhood. One goal of the crime reporting is to get the public more involved in reducing crime by keeping them informed.

Crime Information is now available via the Pensacola Police Department website www.pensacolapolice.com.
Access the link located on the left side of the home page labeled Crime Mapping in order to view neighborhood crime information.

Pensacola Police Department Shares Good Safety Tips with North Hill

NHPA would like to send a HUGE thank you out to Captain David Alexander of the Pensacola Police Department, Community Services Division, for taking the time to visit with the board of directors at our meeting on Monday, September 14th.

Here are some highlights of his discussion with us:
1. Overall crime incidents are down in Pensacola, but the severity of those crimes has increased, and because of that, we must be SMARTER and practice better security measures.
2. We must keep in mind that the unemployment rate is UP, and that crimes of opportunity (thefts from unlocked cars, homes, garages etc.) will be on the rise.
3. Practice "Target Hardening". Review your home security. Ascertain what your weak areas are and harden them. Make sure you are using those security features that you already possess (deadbolts, home security systems, car alarms). Look at what needs to be improved (visibility from the street, make sure your bushes aren't so high that neighbors can not see if someone is outside your house, use your exterior lights on your porches, motion lighting, timers on lights when away, etc.)
4. Be smart about who you hire to perform work at your home. Get their names, look them up on-line to make sure you aren't giving known felons access to your home and family. Some helpful sites for research: www.escambiaclerk.com (Escambia County Clerk of Court)

AND HIS MOST IMPORTANT TIP: Look out for your neighbors. Neighborhood watch is not a small group of patrol shifts, but an ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD being on the look out every trip we make from our homes, to school, to work, to exercise, to shop, etc. Every single time you leave your home, LOOK AROUND, notice anything that is unusual or suspicious and REPORT IT. Don't hesitate to call the non-emergency number at 435-1845 Program it into your cell phones and home phones NOW. If you think you should call....CALL. Help the Police help us, and keep our community safe.

I highly recommend them.....BUT.......Miami-rated hurricane shutters (can withstand 120+ mph sustained winds for 3 hrs) "ain't cheap". On the plus side my Florida Windstorm deductible percentage was reduced by approx. 1/2 - 3/4 of a %, after taking this mitigation action.
